Elden Ring Nightreign review: co-op souls on a timer

FromSoftware squeezes the Lands Between into a three-day race for three players. It mostly works.

Elden Ring Nightreign, released on May 30, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S, is not Elden Ring 2. It is a standalone co-op game that takes the combat and enemies of FromSoftware's open world and folds them into a roguelike built for three.

Three days in Limveld

Each expedition drops a team of Nightfarers onto Limveld, a compact map that changes between runs. A closing ring of the Night's Tide pushes everyone together, and every few minutes the storm forces a boss fight. Survive two nights and the third day ends with a Nightlord, the expedition's real target.

The pace is the point. There is no time to read every item description: you sprint, grab gear, level up at sites of grace in seconds, and pick fights by how much daylight remains.

Classes with personality

The Nightfarers are distinct. The Wylder is a dependable all-rounder, the Guardian shields the team, the Recluse juggles elemental magic and the Executor parries with a katana. Learning how they combine is where most of the depth lives.

Alone is harder

Solo play exists but feels like an afterthought, and playing with strangers depends on a team that communicates without voice chat. With two friends, though, Nightreign produces some of the loudest, funniest and most desperate moments FromSoftware has made.
