Handheld gaming PC settings worth changing on day one

Five settings that make a handheld PC run cooler, last longer and play smoother.

By CRIT6 Staff ·

Handheld gaming PCs such as the Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Legion Go put a full PC library in your hands, but their default settings aim to work for every game rather than the one you are playing. A few minutes in the quick settings pay off in every session.

1. Cap the frame rate

A steady 40 frames per second feels better than a frame rate that swings between 35 and 60. Capping it also saves a lot of battery. On a screen that supports it, try a 40 Hz refresh rate with a matching 40 fps cap: each frame lasts the same time, so motion stays smooth.

2. Set a power limit

The power limit, often called TDP, decides how many watts the processor may draw. Lighter games run just as well at a lower limit, with less heat, less fan noise and much longer battery life. Lower it until the frame rate drops, then step back up once.

3. Use upscaling

Rendering at a lower resolution and upscaling with FSR, or the game's own upscaler, gives a large performance boost on a small screen where the difference is hard to see. Start with the quality preset.

4. Save per-game profiles

Most handhelds can remember settings per game. Set them once for each game you play often and stop thinking about it.

5. Keep it cool

Do not block the vents with a cushion or a blanket, and keep the system and drivers updated: updates for these devices regularly improve performance and battery life.
